Why Attention?
Attention is the concentration of awareness on some phenomenon to the exclusion of other stimuli. It is a subject that has been studied for centuries but only in recent decades have we recognized it as a science. It’s the study of how people process and react to stimuli, just like you are doing right now. Attention is your own property it’s a steady beam of awareness generated by your will. Attention is a resource that we use to perform tasks, make decisions and interact with the world. The more you focus your attention on one thing, the less you have available for others. That’s why it is important to learn how to manage your attention effectively so that you are able to build focus and achieve goals in life while avoiding distractions.
The Problem
The world is moving fast and technology has become a part of our everyday lives. With the speed of change accelerating every year we have a lot of stimulation and distraction all around. It’s no surprise that attention spans are shrinking, but it isn’t just because we’re all so busy. Technology has changed the way we interact with each other and as a result, how we pay attention to what’s happening around us. We live in a world of constant stimulation with advertising, media and technology competing for our attention. Broadly our issues are :
- External distractions and over simulation
- No or low understanding of the apparatus of attention
- No training or guidance on how to build attention
